Son, husband, father, grandfather and a Trooper’s Trooper … Mark E. Lewis had a quiet confidence, incredible work ethic and strong loyalty to his family and profession. Mark was born in Berlin, Wisconsin on February 21, 1961 --- son of Marion and Robert Lewis. He grew up on the family dairy farm located in Eureka, Wisconsin. It was the place where his values of respect and responsibility were instilled. Omro High School is where he loved playing baseball, and was very active in FFA. He graduated in 1979.Mark attended UW-Green Bay, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and participated in the Army R.O.T.C. program. He met his wife, Cristina (Alvarez) Lewis at UW-Green Bay. They were married on August 14, 1982.The Wisconsin State Patrol offered Mark a career in July 1985, and that is where he spent the next 32 years in his dream job. He wanted to be in law enforcement to serve and protect. Every day he put his life on the line for strangers in Columbia, Dane, Winnebago and Outagamie counties. He believed in doing the job well and had strong ethics. Mark taught cadets at the Academy, conducted background investigations, was a CPR instructor, court officer, and was involved in many dignitary protection assignments for several American Presidents and even the former president of the USSR. What better way to apply his political science major up close and personal!Mark also spent 20 years as a licensed Emergency Medical Technician, using his skills to again help others. He spent 10 years volunteering for Waunakee Area EMS, eventually becoming its Director before moving back to the Fox Valley. He continued using his EMT skills with Gold Cross Ambulance and the Timber Rattlers. His passion for baseball kept him at the Timber Rattlers in Appleton as a Security supervisor for 10 years.He loved spending time with his daughter, Jamie Wilkinson of Necedah. A Trooper’s family never has a regular schedule --- but Mark always found a way to be involved in family activities. Many swimming and gymnastics practices and competitions found him learning new sports. He was so proud to watch his daughter break record after record in the pool.Volunteering was also something Mark loved to do. He was a volunteer EMT, 4-H project and county leader, member of the Optimists and a tireless volunteer running the electronic timing systems for boys and girls swim meets at Waunakee High School. When Mark took a transfer to Outagamie County with the State Patrol, he became a regular donor at the Community Blood Center in Appleton. He donated over 500 platelet units used to help many cancer patients and several hundred pints of whole blood. Mark was also a registered Bone Marrow donor.Grandchildren Mackenzie, Daniel and Anthony were loved by Mark. He found time to take DJ fishing, instill some of the baseball passion, and show him the ropes of being a State Trooper. Mackenzie loved to read stories with him and share a Sponge Bob cartoon, and Mark was so proud to see her finish 8th grade recently. Anthony learned how to use a baseball glove with Grandpa.Mark always came back to his calling of being a Trooper. He believed that wearing the Stetson is earned and always wore his uniform with pride. The State Patrol gave him experiences such as dealing with the tribal spear fishing conflicts, training for riot control, being involved in active shooting events, providing protection at high profile trials, and was caught literally in the middle of the state and teachers union protests in the State Capitol. Too often, when the snow started flying, Mark dutifully took the call to report to help motorists.His courage and determination helped him in the brave fight against aggressive cancers recently. Mark initially won the battle, becoming a survivor. The war would be won by the cancer. Master State Trooper Mark Lewis finished his career strongly, meeting his goals and completing 32 years of service. He retired from the State Patrol on his own terms.Mark passed away very late on the night of October 17, 2017. He is survived by his wife Cris of 35 years, and his daughter Jamie and grandchildren. He is further survived by his dogs, who he grew to love in spite of them wanting his warm spot in the bed.
